Universal Orlando Resort is home to four incredible theme parks, each offering a completely different experience. Whether you're a thrill-seeker, a movie lover, a water park enthusiast, or a first-time visitor trying to figure out where to start, understanding the differences between the parks will help you make the most of your trip. Here's a breakdown of everything you need to know about Universal Studios Florida, Universal Islands of Adventure, Universal Volcano Bay, and Universal Epic Universe.
Universal Studios Florida
Universal Studios Florida is the park for those who love movies, TV shows, and pop culture. It's also the more family-friendly option when it comes to ride intensity, making it a great starting point if you're travelling with little ones or prefer a slightly calmer experience.
The park is divided into several themed areas. Production Central is home to fan favourites like Despicable Me Minion Mayhem™ and Illumination's Villain-Con Minion Blast. New York brings the Revenge of the Mummy and the beloved Blues Brothers Show. World Expo is where you'll find Springfield — the immersive home of The Simpsons - complete with Krusty Burger, Flaming Moes, and The Simpsons Ride™, as well as MEN IN BLACK™ Alien Attack. Hollywood is home to the Horror Make-Up Show, and Woody Woodpecker's KidZone has plenty to keep younger children entertained, including the classic E.T. Adventure. Over in San Francisco, Fast & Furious: Supercharged rounds out the park's offering.
The big draw for Harry Potter fans here is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ - Diagon Alley™. Harry Potter and the Escape From Gringotts™ is an absolute must-ride, and the level of immersion throughout the entire area is second to none. You can also board the Hogwarts™ Express from King's Cross Station, which takes you directly to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ - Hogsmeade™ in Universal Islands of Adventure — a journey that's very much an experience in itself, not just a mode of transport.
Universal Islands of Adventure
If Universal Studios Florida is the movie lover's park, Universal Islands of Adventure is the thrill-seeker's paradise. This is where you'll find the big coasters, the fantasy worlds, and some of the most iconic rides in Orlando.
Enter the park and head left for Marvel Superhero Island, where The Incredible Hulk Coaster® dominates the skyline. You'll also find The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man® and Doctor Doom's Fearfall in this area, along with character meet and greets with your favourite Marvel heroes. Head right for Seuss Landing, a brilliantly colourful area packed with gentle rides perfect for younger visitors — though don't underestimate The Cat in the Hat, which has a few surprises in store!
Toon Lagoon is home to two water rides — Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls® and Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges® — so be warned, you will get wet. Skull Island features the Reign of Kong, Jurassic Park has the thrilling River Adventure, and The Lost Continent is home to Poseidon's Fury.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ - Hogsmeade™ sits at the heart of Universal Islands of Adventure and is where you'll find Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™, Flight of the Hippogriff™, and all the magic of the village itself, including Ollivander's Wand Shop, The Three Broomsticks, and the iconic Butterbeer. The Hogwarts™ Express departs from Hogsmeade™ Station back to King's Cross Station at Universal Studios Florida, completing the full Wizarding World experience — and don't miss Hogwarts™ castle itself, which is as breathtaking in person as it is on screen.
Universal Volcano Bay
Universal Volcano Bay is an entirely different kind of park - a fully themed tropical water park built around the towering Krakatau volcano. Think lazy rivers, wave pools, thrilling water slides, and plenty of poolside lounging, all wrapped up in a lush, immersive island setting.
This is the park to visit if you're looking for a day away from the theme park queues, want to cool off in the Florida heat, or simply fancy a more relaxed day out. It's a completely different experience to the other parks and really isn't comparable - it's just brilliant in its own right. The park uses a virtual queuing system via the Universal app, meaning you can grab a spot in line for a ride and then relax on a sun lounger until it's your turn. It's easily one of the best water parks in Orlando.
Please note that Universal Volcano Bay is closed from 20th October 2026, with a planned reopening of 1st April 2027. Please check your ticket inclusions, as not all tickets include access to Universal Volcano Bay.
Universal Epic Universe
Universal Epic Universe is a spectacular addition to Universal Orlando Resort that has nearly doubled Universal's footprint in central Florida. The park is built around five fully realised worlds, connected by Celestial Park — a sweeping central hub of gardens, water features, and headline attractions that acts as the beating heart of the entire experience.
The worlds each have their own distinct personality and atmosphere. SUPER NINTENDO WORLD™ bursts with colour and energy, bringing the world of Mario and friends to life with rides like Mario Kart™: Bowser's Challenge and Mine-Cart Madness™, plus interactive gameplay and character encounters throughout. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ - Ministry of Magic™ takes a completely fresh angle on the Wizarding World, blending the Parisian streets of Fantastic Beasts with the grandeur of the British Ministry of Magic, including the major attraction Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry™.
How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk is a warmly realised Viking world of soaring cliffs and bustling harbours, with rides like Hiccup's Wing Gliders and Dragon Racer's Rally, plus the spectacular Untrainable Dragon live show. Dark Universe is a moody, gothic world inspired by Universal's classic monsters — think storm-lit laboratories, atmospheric tension, and thrilling rides like Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment and Curse of the Werewolf. Celestial Park itself also has its own attractions, including the thrilling dual racing coaster Stardust Racers.
With five distinct worlds under one roof, Universal Epic Universe comfortably stands alongside the other parks as a full day - or even two - of its own.
Which Park Should You Choose?
The great news is that with all of our tickets, access to Universal Studios Florida, Universal Islands of Adventure, and Universal Epic Universe is included, so you can experience the very best of Universal Orlando without having to pick and choose. Universal Volcano Bay is included with selected tickets, though do bear in mind it is currently closed from 20th October 2026 until 1st April 2027.
Each park is genuinely different, with very little crossover between them, so every day feels fresh. Universal Studios Florida is brilliant for movie fans and families. Universal Islands of Adventure is the go-to for thrill rides and fantasy worlds. Universal Volcano Bay is a world-class water park that deserves a day all to itself when it reopens. And Universal Epic Universe adds five incredible worlds that raise the bar for what a theme park can be. All parks are easily accessible from Universal CityWalk, and free buses run to all parks from Universal Orlando Resort hotels. However you choose to split your time, you're in for an incredible trip.
